I first thought a colleague was joking when he said that all the current government plans to do is plan to reduce emissions by 14% below 2005 levels by 2050.
14% below 2005 levels by 2050 is 19% above 1990 levels by 2050.
We need 80% below 1990 by 2050.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change concludes that Canada needs to reduce emissions by 80% below 1990 levels by 2050. In other words, the current government's plan doesn't even come close to preventing dangerous climate change.
This plan represents an embarrassing abdication of responsibility - embarrassing for Albertans, embarrassing for Canadians and shameful in the eyes of those vulnerable to the dangers of climate change.
